System Thinking and Simulation Modelling

Symmetric has extensive experience in building dynamic simulation models with groups of managers and clinicians. The major benefit is to create deep and shared understanding of how long patient pathways operate across multiple agencies. Such models provide the basis for identifying and communicating interventions that can help improve all performance targets for all involved. They also challenge the use of informal, single agency policies and identify data requirements for improved operational management of services. We specialise in converting client models for we-based use to accelerate learning.

Recent projects include:
  • National policy on delayed hospital discharges
  • Disease management - modelling of NICE guidelines for the introduction of a stepped approach to depression services
  • Future proofing investment in buildings
  • Flexible use of bed-based and community services across whole health and social care economies
  • Forensic strategy
  • Capacity planning for hospitals, waiting list and clinic planning modelling
We employ a facilitated, six step approach to model building.

Step 1: System dynamics needs a significant managerial issue and a committed, consistent management team representing all agencies involved in the issue. 'Translators', experienced in both conceptualising and formulating system dynamics models, are required to work with the management team to create an owned the modelling process mental models of the management teams.

Step 2: Trends in the major performance measures of the organisation and their future trajectories, both desired and undesired, are analysed.

Step 3: The key contribution of system dynamics is then to formulate a high-level process map linking processes across organisations and populated with the best data available.

Step 4: These map, when simulated, must be capable of demonstrating their ability to match current reality ('what is' analysis).

Step 5: Once validated, simulation models can be used effectively for testing new ideas ('what if' analysis) and for challenging existing processes, policies and organisational structure.

Step 6: In order to disseminate models to the widest audience, Symmetric consulting specialises, with partners, in converting models to web based learning environments. These allow users to experiment constructively both with set policies and with their own data and policies superimposed on the models.
